Winches
So I'm looking at getting a winch since I'm usually tooling around by myself.... I'd like to know... how big of a winch do I need? I've seem them rated at 12,000lbs for 700-900seems like a pretyy good price for a mile marker winch. Just wanting to know how high I should go?

RE: Winches
Shorty or HummerMike would probably be your best bet here, care to chime in guys!? When I looked at getting one, and I still am; I sort of figured I'd get something big enough to pull out an H1. I'd rather go for a bit of over kill than not enough .. besides, the difference in cost was rather insignificant on the Warn winches from what I saw. Personally I'm leaning towards their winch bumper, nice clean install too!

RE: Winches
i have the Warn 9500 on the bus. so far, it's been more than sufficient to pull me out of anything i've been hung up in. i even used it to pull an H1 sideways about 4 inches before the pull pal snapped. the trick with a winch is to use almost all the cable in order to get the full power out of it. using a ****** block will increase your pulling power as well. just don't go below about 6-7 wraps of cable on the winch. a 12k lb winch is a bit of overkill for an H3, but if it gives you peace of mind and it fits, then go for it.

RE: Winches
Yes it is .. had my avalanche airborne as a result of black ice back in early February -04 I think .. the road was raised approx 2 feet so took a short flight, clipped a road sign pole and of course snapped it like a twig ... ended up about 12 feet in from the road, and this at approx 18-20 mph tops ... Shy of a slight dent in my passanger side step bar and passanger front tire being slightly out of alignment I had no damage .. other than to my wallet after that !@#$!@#$!@# tow job ... I'll never drive another 2WD in my life lo!

RE: Winches
This is an old post but instead of starting a new one I used the search function and came across this post. I want to put a Warn winch on the 3 and can't decide between the Warn 9000XDI or the Warn Tabor 9K. Suggestion or recommendations please.

RE: Winches
A 9000lb winch will do just fine for an H3. if you need more power, you can use a ****** block and double your pull but you need to be careful as to how much is left on the spool. Usually, a 12000lb winch is something you'll see on an H1. A bit overkill for an H3 but you could certainly bolt one to the front since the bolt patterns on winches are typically the same.
