You almost have to do a lot of the work yourself. I would want to anyway but yes you do what you can to save money because you know there will be lots of unexpected things come up.

When we "broke in" (door was unlocked, I swear!) I looked around and didn't see any water damage. And it had a newer stove in it, hopefully that's a good sign on the wiring. I know it's no guarantee, just hoping. The switch's seem to be the newer type also, I know someone could have just changed them, but I'm hoping for all of this to be good signs.
Tomorrow I start back on my hunt to find the bank that actually owns it right now. Once I get ahold of the right people I plan on getting a thorough inspection done to see how bad of shape I could be in. Then the hard part, selling the house that I'm in!

It does sound like some newer wiring has been done, but it would be worth your while to make sure!!! You can change switches without changing the wiring, I would want to be on the safe side, people take short cuts all the time and if your going to invest then you want to make sure it's not going to burn down around your ears while you sleep...If you can't sell your current house, look into renting... that way it would pay for itself until the market is better, then sell.

the market here is non existant right now, but it will pick up eventually... it always does. With Beechnut moving out, it's going to be really tough for awhile... this is a small village and Beechnut has been here since forever and employes most of the people here and it's really going to hurt this place when they are out of here
