Default Tire chirping?

I was making a tight turnaround in a parking lot yesterday when I noticed an odd noise. Rolling down the windows, it sounds like a little chirping noise, like the tires are slipping or jumping on the pavement. Happens once or twice a second and only when the steering wheel is completely locked to one side or the other.

Is this normal? What could be causing this? My first thought was a differential locking up somehow.

No, I don't think so. I just went out and put the car in locked hi and locked low modes and tried turning. Feels completely different, when it's in a locked mode I can feel the car straining to make the turn and then breaking traction. That's not what's happening when it's not in a locked mode. The sound is somewhat similar, but without the resistance/release. When I put it back in normal mode, it went back to normal turning (except for those little chirps).

On that subject, does anyone know at what point Hummer switched over from the plastic to the aluminum shift fork? Short of tearing things apart, is there any way to tell which I have?

My tires almost always chirped when turning at lockout when I had the stock 265's on. Now that I have 305's and had the front end realigned I haven't heard it much anymore.

When I had my stockers on it would chirp every time I made a tight turn.....even at very slow speeds.
