Steering gear box issue

Steering gear box issue
I kept hearing a grinding noise when I would back up and turn at the same time, also mostly happened when it was cold out. I took off the skid plate and noticed the gear box was showing some gear which did not look normal to me. I researched and so far ppl say its not a big deal it was just a dust shield. so far I just put grease on it and problem solved but I need to get an alignment and I rather get the problem fixed if there is one before I get the alignment?

those splines showing is normal. Gear box shouldn't care if you are backing up.
I can't hear the grinding so I'll make some guesses:
= Make sure tires are not rubbing on plastic inner fenders,
= grease all fittings on steering parts,
= check front hub bearings - mine went out at 95k and would grind if bad - keep an eye on this anyway. Get Timken off Amazon, best and cheapest there
