Default Running a DRY K&N Filter

What happens if you run the K&N Filter dry with no oil after washing it? Does it just turn into a regular old filter? I know how the oil works, but in theory wouldnt a dry filter allow more air through? Would that make it less efficient blocking harsh things going into the engine?

The oil is what traps and holds the dirt, the foam is only there as a matrix to provide the max oily surface area to grab dirt as it passes by (not really through, as with a paper filter). A paper filter element is a true barrier, the air must pass through microscopic openings while particles are stopped. It actually filters better as it gets dirtier, though reducing flow.

A dry K&N element is almost like no filter at all. (Though IMO an oil-coated one isn't a whole lot better.)

What is the diameter I should be looking for for the H3? I haven't had a chance to take it off and measure it.

Hummerguy, I can't believe you are still trying to get out of taking your filter off and measuring it. I think you might actually be lazier than me.

Why thank you kind sir/mam Tell me about it. I am one week away from closing and moving into my new house and I don't seem to have time to sleep let alone work on my car. It's pretty sad actually. At least a week from now I'll have my very own garage and won't have to worry about working on my car in an apartment building parking garage. It's not by choice believe me.

HummerGuy, I have a K&N filter that I am taking off this week that has less than 1,500 miles on it. I will sell it to you for $30.00 plus shipping ( I paid a little over $40.00 new). I looks brand new! This way you will not have to wait for a filter to dry as all you would have to do is change to a clean filter than clean the old one and let if fully dry and oil. I am switching to a K&N CAI this week along with a PCM For Less. If you are interested let me know.
