Funny, but actually, the H3 has fulltime 4wd, not AWD. There's a big difference.

4wd v. AWD

Does anyone know of a way to disable 4WD on the H3. Is there an aftermarket add on to achieve this?

Reasons:

1. Performance (all the power to the back wheels)

2. Mileage

Before anyone gets riled up over the idea, remember most Trophy trucks and Baja vehicles are 2wd not 4wd.

In order to see any real gains in either performance or milage, you would have to modify the transfer case to operate in only 2 hi, probably easiest done by swapping in a transfer case fron a Colorado/Canyon pickup that has partime four wheel drive, and then you would need to be able to disengage the front hubs. Again, possibly getting those parts fron the transfer case donor. But let me ask you this, if you were to go through all of the expense to do this, and loose the added value in traction, stability and control the full time four wheel drive provides, would you gain enough increase in performance/economy to make it worth it, both financially and in enjoyment? Besides, why go though all that work when the Colorado/Canyon has what you are looking for and is lighter to boot. Plus, you can haul more junk in it.

In addition to LG's comments, you'd also have to disable the TCS. All that cost to basically ruin an awesome truck in order to gain a couple MPG.

I didn't buy a trophy truck or a baja vehicle. If that's what you wanted then you should have bought that.

I'm really just thinking out loud to get feedback, I don't want to lose the 4 wheeling ability. If I had wanted a truck I would have bought a Tacoma and taken it to Fabtech. H3 is the coolest mide size vehicle out there. I am really directing this to Hummer so when my lease is up in 09. They may have one that does this.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that. All of the Hummers have full time four wheel drive, and I don't think that is something they will drop in the future. It goes with the styling.
