rattle from 10mph to 40mph
hey. i have a 2009 hummer h3, base model. lately i've been hearing a rattling sound from near the front passenger tire area. the sound litterally sounds like a continuous "vroom" sound. it only happens between 10mph to about 40mph. when i'm in park and step on the gas, the sound is not there...only when i am moving forward. i checked shields and various things under the car, but turned up nothing. could it be something with the suspension? brake system? help please. last resort is to take it to a dealer and probably spend a lot of money.

more guesses will follow.

thanks for the feedback so far! i'll have to look into those too. as far as the sound, it doesn't start rattling until the engine gets warm. when you start to move forward from a stop position, it rattles at about 10 -40 mph when you gradually increase your speed, or gradually press the gas pedal. but if you kinda floor the gas pedal, the rattle does not occur. perhaps the sound of the engine overpowers the sound of the rattle? or the rattle issue does not have time to make the rattle sound. kinda difficult to explain. does this help though? please let me know if there are other details that can help explain better.

by the way, the sound itself kinda sounds like a shield by the muffler is loose. literally sounds like "vrooooooooooooom" until it hits 40mph or so. the sound is loud an embarrassing because my h3 is fully customized and should perform flawlessly.

It's the shield that's around the downpipe from the manifold. I had the same issue for months until I found it. I used a hammer handle and simply pushed it in the front/center. If you look under there you'll see what I mean. Just tweek it a bit, problem solved. And yeah, makes it sound like 200,000 mile Escort!
