Default New H3 Owner - Getting Started

Hi everyone,

I am a new H3 owner as of Friday. It's a 2007 , 5-speed model, 110 highway miles, No Navi.... Paid $10,500. I have a few questions:

At this mileage, what should I get checked out first? What's usually first to go around 110k miles

2) I am interested getting 2 Din navi, Bluetooth deck... Any suggestions?

3) I need backup sensor AND backup camera kit? Are they only sold separate or is their kits thatt will display the distance reading overplayed on top of camera image?

4) what should I know about my hummer?

Congrats on your new truck.

1) Check your owners manual for the maintenance schedule. If you don't know what has or hasn't been done already, then do it all.

2) Pioneer and Kenwood have good head units, but it depends on what you value most. Do you like a good navigation system above all else or is sound quality and features what you're looking for? I would suggest that you check out crutchfield.com and do some comparison, however, once you decide on what you want, you definitely want to buy it somewhere else, because crookfield is expensive!

3)Most backup camera kits come with everything you need. I don't know of any that display the distance in numbers, but many have the colored lines that you can use as a guide for distance.

4) Read the owners manual.

If you don't have solid maintenance records, I'd recommend changing oil, both diff's, transfer case, and xmission fluids. That way you at least know the status of all those critical lubricants. If the idle is not real smooth you may need to clean the Mass Airflow Sensor (lots of threads on this) and the throttle body (also some threads).

At that mileage you'll defenately want to do a flush and refill on the coolant. An check the radiator and hoses for sediment. Dexcool is known to turn to brown sludge over time.

To combine what everyone else has said.

CHANGE EVERY FLUID IN THE VEHICLE! Even the power steering and the brake fluid. It never hurts to start with a clean slate on fluids no matter how many miles. It is for the most part inexpensive, but a little time consuming.

Think of it like this:

Rear Diff Fluid/gasket: $45 Rear diff: $1000
Front Diff Fluid/gasket: $45 Front diff base: $1300
Power Steering Fluid: $10 Power Steering Pump $180
Etc.

Awesome!! Thanks for all the help guys. Just found out from previous owner The fluids have all been checked, oil replaced 2 weeks ago so i should be good for another 4k miles.

As far as the Pioneer vs Kenwood debate? Which system do most people on here use? What backup camera do people swear by? Also with the metal bumper, how are the cameras / sensors being installed?

That ain't the same as "the fluids have all been changed". A lot of folks never change most of the fluids except the oil. If you are not sure, get them changed. It's cheap insurance.

I changed both diff's in about 90 minutes and cost $80 for gear oil. Dealer wanted $140 each to do the change.
