That is why I sold my OEM side steps and bought a set of Rocky Road rocker protectors.

true....most of the time maybe, but in my case I was negotiating a tight switchback and I hit the rock laterally, it was sticking out at the bend in the turn, it was just high enough that if my bars were not there nothing would of happened, but instead it hit the outside, not the bottom of the nerf bar and pushed the bar in and back and I moved forward and against it, if you look close in the pics you can see the dent on the outside and the bracket is horizontal but bend towards the rear.

I had to laugh when I saw the title.... people always forget that had they not been there that damage would have been on the rocker...

I have to say, I agree with you! I will take off my nerf bars from now on before off-roading it. I was here in my backyard (the coachella valley, also known as Palm Springs) when I centered my vehicle on a rock and my left nerf bar. Man it was a pain to jack my H3 off the rock and I had to at the time use a freaking OEM jack and a lot of rocks. So now I have a reminder (my left nerf bar, which now acts more like a frame gaurd) not to go off-roading without remove the nerf bars.

If you go offroading at a official HUMMER happening, they will tell you you MUST remove your running boards.
Explanation I think is quite simple - with bars still on, your breakover angle decreases so your offroad capability decreases too, right?

That's off-roading 101 - no steps aloud
