Default Narrowing down year and model changes

Hey Everybody,

I have the double honor of being both a newbie and first time auto(not just hummer) buyer.

My first car was a college graduation present(dad's 2000 Jeep grand cherokee), and after 4 years of 9-5 I'm ready to get something for my taste.

First why I'm an H1 addict. In high school my friends dad owneda white H1 wagonand ski trips to the mountains were that much more fun when we all piledin and hit the slopes. Being in one for those hours got me the bug and I've always wanted to own one. Now I actually see that I have the means to.

So I hit lynch hummer, a few forums and have been doing the research, reading significant changes, hearing the honor and horror stories of certain models. I also looked atebay, autotrader, even hereto narrow down my budget, which is $25-28K and now I wonder what model years within that budget would even be realistic?

In a perfect world I would find a 97.5 model with ctis, heated windshield and upgraded a/c and basic. But I also understand that I may find a 93-95 thats been well taken care of.

Am I on the right track here, can anyone suggest other resources that I look into. Any help would be great, the forums awesome!

You will probably need to boost your budget by about 15k to get into a solid good-condition civilian truck... it would take a pretty lucky situation to find a decent civilian truck of any year and model for a price in the mid to high twenties.

[sm=sorry.gif] pikapp, but he's right. I myself have been searching for an H1. My budget was around 40K and I am having a hard time finding something in good condition. [sm=signs003.gif]

Thanks for the advice, the good thing is I can wait for the right deal to come along and I'm not going to blindlyrun somewhere andbuy an H1 just to buy one(although it would rule to do so).

I've seen some mid 90's models on ebay, craigslist and autoextra for high 20's, low 30's. Should I be cautious of those?

Does it have to be an H1? I can appreciate your budget... but this vehicle also has a higher maintenance cost... as I am sure you already realize...

meanwhile H2's are going to low 30's / high 20's...

Whatever you do, stay away from this one. I went and looked at it about 4 days ago and it was a mess. The transmition had problems shifting into 2nd gear, passenger seat reclined back with out you adjusting it, the speedometer....you had to slam the dash to get it to turn on. the horn was not connect to the steering wheel. There was rust all over and under it. Driver seat...the arm rest flopped down. And he said something that was strange to me when I was driving to go see it....he asked how far I would be driving it back I said about 5 hours....he said you should check the oil every 100 miles...hearing that kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I was going to pay $26500 for it....if your looking for a project it might be good....but be cautious of this one.

Iwas actuallychecking that same H1 out chsnprodigy, until I read one of your last threads! Thanks for the heads up. I live in Las Vegas, so that would have been a HUGE wasted trip.

And pikapp, the ones on ebay do look nicely priced, but if you look at the "completed" auctions, very few of them have actually sold. Most "did not meet reserve"...something to think about.

No problem hummer freak. It only took me about 5 minutes to make my disicion not to get that H1. The pictures look nice, but the guy didnt even clean out the interior when I went and looked at it.

Not necessarily - there are some good deals to be found out there... a mid-nineties H1 in the low 30's is not uncommon. But, you will likely have to do some degree of reconditioning/repairs to get them into reliable good working order in the long term and depending on the nature of those issues, it could cost you $5k plus right off the bat, or it could be an easy fix.
