Default n00b question - 3.5L vs. 3.7L

Hello, I am looking at purchasing a used H3 soon. I currently drive an Infiniti G35 Coupe.

Anyways, I see that the 3.5L was only available on the 06 models. I have searched and searched but have not found much info comparing the 2 motors aside from the 20 hp. I could not even find 0-60 times for both.

So does anyone have experience with both? Is it a noticable difference? I test drove a 2006 model and actually did not find it to be as sluggish as the magazine articles make it out to be, even compared to my G35.

I would want the luxury package, and I am seeing about a 3-4k difference in price between comparable 06 and 07 models. Is it worth the price difference or is the difference minimal when you're driving it?

Thanks for your help (in advance).

Only thing i know about the 2006 3.5 was a Cyl. head problem on some vin.#'s. If i was you i would use the search feature for more info and maybe look for one with a 3.7

Thanks. I am having a hard time finding much of anything, probably because the 3.5 was only around for one model year.

I have had both engines. The 3.7 feels a little more powerful however the 3.5 was fine for me also. As a previous poster said, there was a head issue on some the the 3.5's below a certain VIN number. I had one of those but it never showed up in the 16K miles that I had it. Do an expanded search. By manipulating the parameters at the bottom of the search page you can view all posts beginning in 2006. There a several threads on the head/valve issue which will give you the VIN numbers. My 06 and 08 were identical except for the minor model year changes. I think I enjoyed my 06 more than I have my 08. I would not be afraid to get an 06 at all barring the head issue. If it is in the range it may have been changed or may may never happen anyway. Any Hummer dealer will and most GM dealers can look it up for you. Do your homework. This and other Hummer forums are a great tool. This forum, Clubhummeroffroad and HummerXClub are the most active forums. Happy hunting.

Red face my 07h3 was apx same price as 06 at carmax

im in laporte in and found my "red ride" north of chicago

the carmax store in merriville in brought it there for me to check out and it looked NEW and still feels new

that was my first experience with them and i was comfortable, also bought the ext warr so i can relax for a while. i know some dissagree but i sometime take the plunge

i find the 3.7 to be smooth, plenty powerful, and decent mileage
tom
i love the machine

well without being too blunt, offcourse the 3.7 is better, dont you think there was a reason they upgraded to that? i think what you're asking is if the 3.7 is worth the 3-4k more, and my answer would be yes. the interior changes in the models are a plus too

no, that's a fair statement. the reason i ask is because these are claimed ratings, so it could be greater or less than a 20 hp difference. and for instance, my 04 G35 is rated at 280 hp. infiniti tweaked the motor for 05 and made it good for 298 hp. i have driven both and there's honestly no difference. i think the 0-60 ratings are even identical. but i am sure no one here cares about infiniti's.
one thing is that if the 3.7L engine added any considerable weight, that could negate the power gains. i guess i just figured someone on here had to be in my position before and could give some insight.

that said, it seems like the other changes (like moving the window controls up) for the late 07's and 08+'s would be worth the money. soo that is probably what i will go with (an 08).

one other thing i can't find any info on - do any of these trucks have an ipod hookup?

thanks for all the help, i appreciate it!

No on the Ipod Hookup at least from the factory. There are a few after market items you can purchase that you can then tie your Ipod into the factory Radio. Even the 09's don't have an Ipod connection, which I was a little surprised by.

that is surprising, at least that it's not a factory option. i think most new cars have it. not a huge deal though.

Zero to 60 times? That is some funny chit right there!
Hummers do not exist for 0-60 times, SLOW describes them.

Warranty.... was a big reason for 2007 over the 06. 2007s have 5yr 100K, 2006s 4yr 50K. There is still a year left on most all 2007s.

The motors are the same I5 aluminum Atlas blocks, different bores, same stroke.
The 3.5L is a 93MM bore, the 3.7L is a 95.5MM bore, both at a stroke of 102MM.
Hence, if anything, the 3.7L is probably a few unimportant ounces lighter than the 3.5L.
