Looking into getting a H1

Looking into getting a H1
First let me introduce myself. My name is Robert. Alright now thats out of the way. Im looking into getting a H1...and I need some questions awnsered. Is there any year H1 that I should stay away from? How many miles can you get out of the V8 diesel engine? How hard is it to work on a H1 and how expensive? If there are any links or other web pages that someone would suggest I read please suggest anything. Im kinda doing my homework, before I just jump in and buy a H1. Im pretty mechanicly inclined, im a machinist for the Air Force and I work on my own bikes (Aprilia Mille R). Any information anyone can give me will be of great help in my hunt. Thanks for everyones time.

I would stay away from 98's UNLESS it has had its engine replaced 98 is a year where the #8 cylinder crack was very common I have found through forums, auto sales sites etc...
The diesel engine should run for well over 100k miles if maintained well.... as for the maintenance I would really suggest grabbing the maintenance manual from bluehummer.com and also pick up the workshop manual for your year...
there are 3 maintenances that get done on the h1
A Service. every 3k miles... takes a about 3-4 hrs
B Service. every 8k miles... takes about 6-8 hrs
And C Service... every 12k miles... takes about 12-24hrs

RE: Looking into getting a H1
id suggest viewing lynch hummers site and read the model changes for each year so you know what is different with each year... i was tight on budget too thats why i got an 98 also cuz i didnt want ABS or TT4 but yea if you find one with engine replaced in 2001 or later you should be fine...

RE: Looking into getting a H1
for the miles per gallon I honestly never figured it out for myself... but I have heard of 9-13mpg on a H1...
as for the 96 wagon... the high milage on the diesel block isnt really much to worry about there are many 6.5td out there with 200k+ miles on the block... actually the higher the milage on it the more likely the previous owner maintained it well these blocks should get well over 300k miles if maintained properly and with that mileage if it didnt have the #8 cylinder crack by now i doubt it ever will....
