Default is the instant average gas mileage accurate?

I'm buying an 03' H2, and I was able to keep it for a day and a half to try it out... I took it on an hour long drive that I make three times a week to test gas mileage for myself, as I have heard from some owners that they get 6 mpg, and others saying they get as much as 15 mpg hwy.

anyhow, on my trip the instant average readout said 14mpg pretty consistently on the hwy doing between 65 and 70 mph.

the average fuel economy readout reads 12 mpg when you start the truck. I notices that jumping on the gas pedal definitely torqued average econ down lower, but it always seems to settle out around 12 again.

are these guages accurate, or are they just there to make you feel better and make you think you're getting ok mileage?

I notices that around town average econ sucked... like 9-10 mpg. I guess that's to be expected.

I'm only getting 11 with my pickup right now, so I'm not going to be too shocked if this fuel economy info is pretty accurate.

Also... does anyone have any info on pulling a trailer? does it affect fuel econ a whole lot? on my v8 pickup, it doesn't really change anything really.. some guy on another site told me that I should be prepared for 4 mpg with a 5x8 trailer... that sounds a bit funky to me.

Thanks for any input you can throw my way guys!

-Steve

I average 11.4. The instant is kinda deceiving in a way because if you floor it and it goes down to 1 mpg... and then you coast from 100 down to 65 it will say 60,70,80,90 mpg.....

I towed an empty 16'dovetail and you would have never known it was even hooked to the truck. Somebody else had a thread on this... maybe search around. I forget what the title was.

i hate the instant readout, and unfortunately, mine is pretty accurate. if you've still got stock tires on your truck, it should be pretty close. you'll learn not to watch it if you end up buying one, it gets ugly. but that's a given, so there should be no worries.

I only look at my instant gas economy while going down hill .... with a gale force tailwind ... on top of a flatbed ... It is what it is .. a rolling, oversized, heavy brick, which I think never made it in GM's wind tunnels nor passed the desk of an aerodynamics expert .. 10 mpg .. could be worse :-) My old RAM SRT-10 put me on an AVERAGE of 8 mpg combined city/highway ... I have an average around 14 on the H2 .. it's like christmas every day in comparison :-)

Mine WAS an 8.1L LOL! Essentially a DodgeRAM 1500 but with a Viper V10, 505 cube, 500 hp, 0-60 in 5.4 I believe ...

I average about 14 with mine everyday driving. Have had up to 16, but here's the info you want. With my 5x8 enclosed trailer loaded with around one thousand lbs. I get between 12.5 and 13.5. Mind you I am very easy on the pedal and seem to get the best mileage with BP fuel.

DJguy988....

Do you happen to be a DJ?

That's what I do for a living too!

I just got my hummer a few hours ago, and so far I'm finding that setting it on cruise control is netting me 13.2 mpg with a 6x10 trailer filled with speakers, so i guess that answers my question... it doesn't really change anything at all.. I guess the aerodynamics of the truck are so bad that the trailer doesn't even factor in.

oh well...

I'm pretty impressed with the gas mileage actualy.. I heard rumors of 6-8 mpg and I'm getting average econ of 12.2

That's better than with my dodge ram 1500 with the v6 engine, which while pulling the trailer only gave me 9 mpg..

Funny stuff.....yeah, I'm a dj. My H2 is an upgrade from my 99 ram 1500 quad cab. The one thing I didn't mention... the cruise control seems to knock my mileage down. I've noticed if I don't mind losing 5mph going up the hill and letting the vehicle's weight and momentum carry through the incline. I quickly regain the 5mph on the downside. It seems to make a diffference, give it a try, I'd like to know if it stands true with your H2.
