Hummer H1
I am looking to purchase my first h1. I have a couple of H2 so I am not completly foreign to the Hummer World but I do not have a lot of knowledge on the H1. I have driven a few from the early years 95, 93 and the were so slow without the turbo. The research i have done so far indicates they a bit of an engine issue with the diesel engine. So my question is what was the best year for the H1? Would this forum recommend staying with at 2000 or newer?
Thanks for the respons in advance.

What are you going to do with it? If offroading many think that the 97.5 and 98 models are the best. They have the upgraded HVAC, the 6.5 TD motor and no TT4. The #8 cylinder issue is something to be aware of. It affected 96-2000 year trucks. Most, but not all, trucks lost the cylinder before about 30K miles. Most have been replaced and I believe I heard that about 25% of the trucks were impacted. 2003 is when factory lockers became available.
The early trucks with the 6.2 were notoriously underpowered. The 6.5 NA motor is simple, dependable and will run on the freeways at the same speeds as the TD motors.
If you give us more information we can better answer your questions.

I was looking at a 2000 open top Diesel engine that has 84,000 miles on it. I was a bit concerned about the noise on a convertible top going down the highway. Does anyone know if it is noiser that a typical jeep top? I currently do not do much off roading so I mainly daily road driving for this vehicle. I have always loved to look and feel of the H1 and now I am in a position to purchase one. any advice would be great!
What is the normal highway driving speed?

The 350 CI motor is bullet proof and almost anyone can work on them. They are quieter than the diesel but get worse mpg. Power curve and torque is different also. Gas models usually sell for a little less than the diesels.

Soft top noise isn't too bad, it is loud depending on what you are used to, with the diesel, large tires and even with the insulated top, it'll be loud compared to say an H2.
The Gas models limit you to 2 model years only. You won't have the HVAC upgrade unless it was added by the previous owner, if you have an old A/C system installed, it will cost around $2400 for the upgrade kit plus labor to upgrade any pre 97.5 truck to the new system.
The gas mileage is poor, it's why the gas H1 was discontinued after 2 years. It is quiet, and some people don't mind it. It has less torque than the diesels.
