Default H3 Fixed.....Again

Hey guys, just wanted to post this in case anyone has problems.

I came from a semi longish trip (about 250 miles) and the second i put it in park in my driveway, engine started hesitating, running rough and engine code came up. I check the oil, it was about a liter down, and I drove it to napa to grab some oil. As soon as I got passed about 1500 rpm, drove fine. Put the oil in, same story....drive half way home starts spazzing, says stability control failed, engine issue....just freaking out. Managed to get it home. Talked to the dealer, he said drive it over.

So I did.

Anyhow, to make a long story short, I thought it was the head.

It turned out it was couple of things.

A screen from (or around) Camshaft position actuator solenoid valve (incidentally part that failed) got sucked in to, and somehow made the vehicle burn oil (not quite sure on that). That Solenoid failed.

They replaced it with a newer model (one row of holes, vs two) and apparently this is quite a common issue.

I was 200 miles of needing oil change, and the part of the replacement was oil change.....FREEBIE

I found a post with some pictures and similar issue

http://www.coloradofans.com/forums/v...hp?f=8&t=63149

Anyhow, I hope this helps someone. Im taking it on another 250 mile trip tommorow and Ill let you know if there are any issues.

Sorry you had issues with your Hummer, but it is all better now, thankfully.
Thanks for the tip and the great link.
I can't remember what year your H-3 is, but do the newer models now have the upgraded solenoid?

My H3 is 2006 model. Not really sure if the newer models have ugraded solenoid, but according to the dealer, its a common issue (on H3, Colorado and Canyon.....same engine).

And yes the fix worked. I just drove about 250 miles with no issue.

And it burned like HALF the fuel than before. I used like quarter tank per 100 miles......

Ill update on the fuel economy when I fuel up.

Is there a updated P/N for the new actuator. Mine is in the garage right now with the same problem. The only difference is that i pulled all the screens off and freed up the actuator piston until i can get one ordered in. I would definately recommend flushing the oil and filter to try to remove all traces of the chewed up debris screen.

Default Cam Position Actuator

I would assume that they are all still having the problem but I have heard that the new upgradded part only has two screens as opposed to the three screens. Not sure if they are still being held together with the cheap plastic piece that is more than likely the reason for failure.
