Default FYI, Factory Stereo Remote Wire

Just wanted to post what i did the other day. I wanted to put my garmin gps into my car, and have it powered without using the dash plug in. So i was looking for a power/remote wire on my factory 6-disc stereo. I found that the pink wire works just fine. Only downside to using the pink wire is when i unlock or lock my car with my keyless entry, the gps will turn on temporarily and loses its external power and shuts itself off in 30 seconds, unless i start the car of course.

So, for those of you looking for a wire to power and "remote" an aux device such as a gps, the pink wire in the factory harness works fine.

Is the pink your remote wire? I'm not sure since the first thing I did was gut my factory system. If it's your remote wire it shouldn't be triggering the GPS unless your stereo comes on, does your stereo come on when you lock and unlock the vehicle?

That doesn't make a lot of sense.

What type of cord did you use for this? Did you just use the regular garmin cord and remove the adapter end? I saw on Amazon they were selling cords to do this but my garmin has fm traffic and the antenna is build into the cord so I would have to use my existing one. My plan was to install another cig-lighter hidden behind the dash and just plug into that so I don't have to mangle my cord and ruin it.

Broken Halo,

Did you splice the new cig-lighter into an existing power cord or did you wire it directly to the fuse box.? They have this thing called Add-A-Fuse which lets you add an additional fuse to the fuse box. I was thinking about doing this but if there is a way to splice into an existing wire I would rather do that. Let me know and if you spliced into a wire which one did you use?

You could always add an inline fuse too, just a thought. Probably cheaper and easier as long as the fuse is in an easily accessible place.

I mounted one of these under the steering column on the firewall (interior), Buss Fuse Block - BikeBandit.com I then ran a wire from an ignition operated empty fuse slot to a 30 amp relay that I mounted under the hood. The output from the relay feeds this fuse block. I now have 8 ignition operated connection points, all with their own fuses. My gps, backup camera, monitor, additional interior lights, off road light relay, and on-board compressor all hook up to this.

edit: You can pick these up at most auto supplies, or even Meijer, Walmart, etc.

Thank you so much Broker Halo! This is exactly what I am going to do. It beats adding a single fuse. Then I can add my other accessories.
