Engine size question!!

RE: Engine size question!!
I love this I-5 engine, so i'm staying with it. Do you think this V6 will cripple the H3's offroad performance? The only upside i see to this is some of you say the V will run smooth. I never thoughtthe I-5 ran rough. Actually i like it alot better than my Blazer which has a V6. I'm sticking with mine, at least untill the dieselcomes out. I now have my new custom made Obama '08 tire cover that matches mt sonoma metallic red!!

Here's all the engines available to you from GM. You'll need to be able to open .XLS documents to view the whole site.

Trannys are also listed on this site.

RE: Engine size question!!
Here's the power band and torque curve for the I-5 engine
http://media.gm.com/us/powertrain/en..._Hummer_H3.pdf
The really odd property of this engine is torque remains fairly constant, just over 200 lb/ft, no matter what RPM the engine is reving. That's a good thing for real off roaders because HP can't do diddly without the hard twist of torque. The HP band is also pretty high and constant but I don't know if you've ever heard an I-5 at 5600 RPM, it ain't pretty!

RE: Engine size question!!
I can't talk for smoothness until I test them side by side. But I would hope that any upgrade engine would be superior then the one it replaces.
From a strictly numbers perspective the direct injection 3.6 V6 has 60 more horsepower & 30 more ftlbs of torque.
My guess (and only a guess) is that it will offer a little better MPG. With the new CAFE regulations and the increase of gas prices I wouldn't be a bit surprised if we see the 2010 model come out with a true transfer case for a 2wd mode.

An Update:
The June eddition of Automobile magazine has an article on the H3T. In this article, Hummer product director Ross Hendrix says that the I-5 (3.7) will be going away and replaced by the V-6 (3.6). More important the new V-6 and the V-8 will get six speed automatics. These changeswill be on the 2010s. Also the H3T outside of america will soon get an Italian-sourced 2.8 liter turbo-diesel (This engine can not easily meet U.S. emissions standards). GM has a new V-6 diesel that will find its way into both the Cadilac CTS and the next Sabb9-5 in Europe and Hummer is looking at using this engine in the USA.
I think this now makes my decision easier, I will wait for the V-6 with the six speed auto or see if they offer it with a manual. My bet is that 2009 will be the last year for a Hummer with a manual transmission. God I hope I can hold out that long. Yall dont mind if I just keep hanging arourd here Hummerless do you? LOL,

RE: Engine size question!!
I would wait for the V6. That will make it a much nicer truck. the I5 is a stout engine, but it's noisy and pretty much overmatched by the size and weight of the H3. If you are using your H3 offroad most of the time, the I5 is fine. If you live in the mountains, driving on 2 lane roads trying to pass, pulling any kind of trailer, wait for the V6. I believe when the V6 comes out, the I5 will take a huge hit in resale value. It won't be pretty.
