Default Differentials, etc.

I'm in the process of getting a 2002 H1.
Can some of the experienced off-road members give me some insight into the various differentials and their advantages/disadvantages. Why chose one over the other? Why don't I just get Air Lockers on each axle and roll with it???

Me personally, I wouldnt put lockers on mine. For one, you have the option of BTM. The 4x4 system on the Hummer responds very well to BTM. And due to the fact that the truck is full time 4 wheel drive, I would end up forgetting that I was in low or high lock and end up blowing a transfer case. I have never been in a situation where I was wishing I had a locker. BTM works just fine.

joenuzz,
Thanks for the feedback. Ive read some things about the technique, but have not tried it on any vehicle. However, I have read that it can be damaging if NOT done properly. Will this technique, done properly, work for the 2002 H1 also?

Your 2002 has TT4 which is a traction control system. Some people really like wheeling with TT$. I haven't done much of it but prefer to BTM. You can BTM your 2002. While BTMing might stress some of your systems a little more breakage is pretty minimal. I have never had a BTM related break. Like with lockers you don't want a front wheel that is off the ground to come back into contact with the ground while you have a locker on or are BTMing.
With lockers you really need to anticipate their need and engage them before you are in a situation where you really need them. You can BTM from any situation at any time. You can also BTM even if you have lockers installed and not engaged.

djadds, my brother lives in the DFW area( Ferris ). He has a 95 H1 and uses the BTM technique whenever he wheels. I am sure he would be happy to meet you and show you how to do it. It doesn't take long to learn and with a little practice there will be no stopping you. PM me your contact information if you are interested.
