Have had my 3 for 3 mos and about 7k on these Prime Well 285/75/16. I know they are a cheap tire but cant believe that is whats causing the cupping? When I bought the vehicle the front had to be aligned and the new tires. Obviously it had been driving several thousand miles like this (two tires had extreem wear on the outer treads).

Been doing research on what causes cupping? It states that "shocks" could cause the problem. for sure I need new shocks as well just turned 60k miles but want to discuss with you folks about your experiences with "cupping."

Also is it possible to adjust the alignment and camber on the rear of the H3?

 

Cheap tires is the main cause.... but if it is only the rear that's mostly caused by a poor alignment...

I agree with Muddy. I would spend the money and get better tires, and a lifetime alignment from a Firestone or a dealership, if able. There are plenty of good "cheap" tires...Kelly Safari TSR's for example. Did those Chinese tires come with a warranty??

 

I have also seen the axle tube bust the weld and be loose. that will also cause cupping on the inside. I had that issue.

 

ouch.... that is pretty extreme...

 

I would say for one thing with an AWD 4x4 vehicle and depending on type of tire aggression, usually from my experience you should rotate and balance them at least every 5K.
I recently purchased my used H3 in April 2011 and the tires tread wise looked brand new, but it also had cupping or wear on the inside..
Alignment and balance was all within specs.

Maybe a leveling kit also might help out??????

 

Super Awesome discussion folks!!!! Yes these are cheap @$$ Chinese tires, but here on the islands still paid over $800 mounted. Next set will spend the money and get E rated Pro Comps like my diesel.
Ok back to the topic, glad that Skeeter brought up the axel issue. From what I have found if you got cupping on all 4 tires and or all over the tire then it opens up possibilities of worn shocks, alignment, camber, bushings etc. but its only the rear and its only the inside tread (5 lines of tread, only the 2nd to the last inside of well is cupped) is showing symptoms.

Bigdawg hit it on the nose too, these tires are very aggressive and proly need to be rotated quite frequently. Not to mention just after creating this post the wife calls and tells me the "low pressure light is on" So cheap tires = heightened preventative maintenance!

Plan was to get the lifetime alignment from FS where I bought these tires, so that is next, along with an inspection of the REAR AXEL TUBE
Oh and of course no warranty on these tires, did I mention it was $800 with buy 3 get one free!!!!!!!!! next time ill drop the $1500 for a good set!

I just assume that the inflation was correct since H3's have TPMS...

 

Are you thinking that the tire pressure is the reason for the cupping???? I hate that the 06 TPMS do not show actual pressure.

New Blistens/polybumpstops with a front level is in the plans as well!
