Chrome vs. Stainless Steel?
What is the difference between chrome and stainless steel as it relates to accessories for the H3?
I know there is probably a difference in its make up, but is there a difference in how it looks or how long it lasts? Rusts issues with either?
Thanks!

I've worked in a machine shop for 20 years. I'm no expert on metallurgy but I deal with people that are on a regular basis.
If someone does a good chrome job, then it is the way to go. Cleans up good and will not rust over the long haul. However, most of your aftermarket makers of chrome doo-dads skimp on quality. The surface should be completely smooth, even in the corners and crevices. A good chrome job will be slightly less shiny than a cheap one. If the chrome bonds with the surface it causes slightly duller finish. If the chrome is just laying on top of the surface it will shine. Looks like the fake chrome you see on cars and bikes now where it's a film applied to plastic.
Stainless Steal is your safest bet unless you can confirm that the chrome plater is reputable.
A reputable chrome plater will offer a warranty.
I have a 96 triumph motorcycle with a great chrome job, it was warranted for life. It lived outside for 2 years and still does not have any signs of rust. I also have a 2005 triumph that already shows some signs of rust. It's always been kept indoors. Was not warranted.
jmho.

Good stuff all, thanks for the help. I went back and relooked at some of the accessories and a couple were "chrome plated". I am guessing that the chrome used in what I was looking for isn't top quality. I will probably end up going with the stainless steel. Its just for nerf bars for now anyway...
