Default Changing to Synthetic Oil

I have a 2010 3.7L I5 w/16,000 miles on it. I want to switch to synthetic oil from the regular stuff. Can I just drain the old standard oil out, pop in a new filter, and fill it w/synthetic or do I need to do anything else? The reason I ask is b/c a friend of mine said that it isn't the best idea to switch to synthetic if your car has been using regular oil for a long time. Since I only have 16,000 miles on it I don't think this applies to me but I wanted to be sure. Also, any recommendations on what brand to use? I'm leaning twords AMSOIL b/c they are somewhat local and their sales rep I talked to really impressed me but I did hear Mobile 1 was pretty good.

Also does anyone have a pdf of the oil change thread in the FAQ (https://www.hummerforums.com/forum/h3-frequently-asked-questions-33/h3-oil-change-pictures-6122/)? The pictures aren't showing up. Or if anyone knows of another set of instructions w/pics I would be greatful.

Thanks,

Jason

No special preperation is needed to switch to synthic oil. Like you said just drain the old and put in the new.

I use Mobil 1 because it's available everywhere and a Fram Extended Guard filter.

The pics in the FAQ thread are not there because the poster is long gone, and probably broke the links to the pics, or lapsed his photo storage account.

You don't really need the pics, just follow the instructions. You can search for pleanty more oil change threads.

I use Mobile one mostly, or whatever other brand full synthetic that might be on a super sale when I need it. Me no likey the fram filters (1 bad experience is all that took), I just use the AC Delco.

PS. Your "friend" ain't the sharpest cheese on the hors d'oeuvre platter. Whether you ever used conventional oil, or how long, has nothing to do with when or if to switch to synthetic.

I keep pretty accurate mileage checks. 20 consecutive fill-ups averaged 12.28 mpg. Since I switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic my last 7 fill-ups have averaged me 13.27 mpg. That's about 7.5% savings on fuel for just switching oil.

i was told if you get your head rebuilt or a valve job you should use conventional oil for 1st 1000 miles.

it would be fascinating to hear the "factual research data" that backs up that profound announcement.

I get lazy sometimes and take our H3 to the corner Penzoil oiil change place who has semi-synthetic Penzoil as a standard change. Anyone know if the semi is a significant advantage or not over dino oil?

I run the castrol syntec full synthetic, changed it over to that when I bought it at 30k and now I'm at 61k and no issues at all
