Howdy all...1st post.
I thought this would be a good place to start....This is the H3 forum, right?
I've been driving cars for 36 years now and pretty much a DIYer.. I have never, I mean NEVER, let some grease monkey change my own oil..As long as I'm able to crawl under the car and do it myself, I will continue to do so...It offers many benifits..1. Exercise, 2. The chance to learn YOUR vehicle, 3. The chance to look things over underneath for leaks, problems before they get too far along, 4. Pride of accomplishment in a job well done...And you know when you're done, that everything was put back together right without any shortcuts and lost parts due to half-*** work.
Having said that..
I have always used OEM filters and Castrol Oils...Every car I have ever owned (most from New) I've used Castrol and never had any engine problems of any kind...I have also witnessed many people who have used Mobil 1 and ended up with OIL LEAKS, i.e., seals, and/or excessive oil consumption. I once used Mobil 1 in a Toyota Supra I had (from New), it didn't leak any, but sure burned away a quart every 1000 miles, then when I went back to Castrol the consumption stopped...Suit yourselves..But I speak from experience.
This current H3 I now own is going to be no different (BTW, I love it)...Researching this car's needs, I have found that the engine is already pre-broke in..And that the OIL CHANGE clock is set to remind you at 7500 miles of when the oil change is due....I will change my oil (just because I'm ****), at 1000 miles, then every 3000 miles there after with CASTROL SYNTEC 5w30..The owners manual (yes, there is one in the glove box believe it or not
) explains very clearly how to RESET this OIL CHANGE clock...It recommends that you do this at each oil change, regardless of the time frame you use, so as to not get the DIC notice, that is, if these sort of informational read-outs annoy you.
I hope to have many happy miles of motoring pleasure with this H3. I look forward to bantering the pro-cons of HUMMER ownership here and will post here often to help with the DIY's as I am.

Just did my first OIL and FILTER change today...It took exactly 6.25 qts. with FILTER...This is one of the easiest cars I've ever changed oil on..I like the little drip pan for the oil filter too...Cute!
(TIP; If you do it yourself, make sure you fill the new FILTER with OIL before you install it...Plus, don't forget to reset the 'CHANGE OIL CLOCK' on your DIC, Owner's Manual page 5-17)
FILTER = $5.95
7 qts. of OIL = $34.93, @$4.99/qt. of Castrol Syntec 5w30
Total = $40.88
The exercise and chance to learn the underneath of this fine Machine and Polish the Skid pans....Priceless[sm=smiley20.gif]

2. Band type Filter wrench.
3. Oil catch pan.
4. 6 pack of cool ones.
5. 1 Cuban cigar

I was taught many years ago how to change oil by the fine folks at the motor pool at Kaneohe Bay. One of those things they required before I could get my 1 1/4 ton license to drive HMMWV's. I learned I don't like getting under cars, getting my hands greasy and dirty, my getting dirty. I haven't changed oil in anything for years. And I've learned that when I'm on a road trip to wear a miniskirt and I don't have to change a flat tire either. It's well worth whatever I have to pay someone else to do it. I wish I was one of those folks that was mechanically inclined and loved them doohickeys under the hood. I'll wash, polish, wax, vacuum, treat the leather, and polish the chrome. Someone else can do the dirty work.
