If you are smelling it, it needs replaced anyways. whether the leak was caused by driving in 4hi lock, I could not tell you, but I would just pull the cover check everything reseal it, and replace fluid with new.
Thanks for reply. Can you offer additional details on:
  • "pull the cover check everything reseal it"
    • drain and fill plugs areeasy to spot so changing fluid should be a snap.
    • not clear what cover you are referring to - is it the differential? Is there a thread you can point me to that has the documented procedure?
  • any particular brand of oil you recommend?
Thanks,

No need to pull the diff cover until you drain the fluid and see what comes out. If you have any significant metal particles or shavings, then perhaps you need to inspect further.
If the fluid comes out dark but otherwise free of debris then pulling the cover isn't going to show you anything.

You need to start by inspecting the fluids.

Update:
Changed front differential fluid using Mobile 1 Gear Oil. Will know in the next few days if this resolves the strong smell.

Will check the transfer case and rear differential oils to see if those should be changed as well.

Thanks for the input so far....
