Default Battery

I have a 2007 h3. I had to replace the battery and alternator. The battery was getting over charged to the point it was going to explode. Now I'm getting an acid smell from the engine compartment. Has anyone had this problem? Thank you.

Connect a voltmeter to the battery. It should read appx 12v and dip slightly on start. Then it goes up to as high as 15 volts briefly, then drops to 13-14 appx. If a batt gets fried its probably getting over 15 forever!.That can be caused by the controler that should have been tested when the new gen was put in.
If you are at or over 15, dont drive till you fix it.It will fry again.

Thanks. I looked online couldn't find any prices or pics of the "controler". Do you know what the exact name of what the part is? Thanks

Hey Deputy, (lol)

I'd take the time first to test with a DVM and verify that you are indeed at approx 12.9 Volts when sitting (engine not running). Then with engine running test for approx 14-15 Volts.
As stated if higher your boiling the bird.

Old alternator was overcharging battery. New alternator put in. Still getting sulfer smell. New alternator was checked by mechanic and it's putting out proper current. Mechanic thinks it might be the computer. Any ideas?

If you have a new battery, and your alternator is putting out the correct volts, do as suggested above and check the volts at the battery with no power and volts at the battery with engine running. They should be as HappyHummer specified above.

Volts measured by mechanic. New alternator is putting out proper volts to the new battery. Still getting acid smell when the outside weather temps are high.

I'D pull the batt and scrub the area where it might have leaked the acid.
