Default Assistance in Shock R&R

Directions needed. RNR of rear shocks, non-airbag suspension, on my 2008 H2. Thanks...

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Support the rear axle.
  1. Disconnect the air suspension level sensor (if equipped). Refer to Air Spring Leveling Sensor Replacement.

  2. Remove the upper shock absorber nut and the bolt.
  1. Remove the lower shock absorber nut and the bolt.
  1. Remove the shock absorber.

hmm. the new shock expanded when i removed retaining strap. unable to compress to reduce length to fit lower bolt hole. Why support the rear end as well suppoting the vehicle? tU

I cut the strap after the shock is loosely installed. You should be able to remove the shock and compress it with your body weight while someone slips a strap back on.

You need the clearance.

I didn't have anyone to help me do the rear swap. I just got under the vehicle & compressed it with one arm & shoved the bolt in as fast as possible. At least I can finally justify how bench pressing can be used in the real world, lol. That was a really, really frustrating endeavor!

Yes you need to lift by the frame then support axle, one reason is for maximum clearance to install new shock the other is if you lift by frame and not support axle the rear axle will drop and the coil spring will come out.

I used a cargo strap to hold it in the compressed position, then cut the shipping strap. Name:  IMG_4637_zps9rff8fbs.jpg
