Guys! Guys! Guys!

I can't believe I am hearing this from a bunch of men....Look at this pic, if you have big tires 315/75/16 KM2's ...you have to have a big spare, not only for if you have a flat tire, look how dumb it would look if you had big tires with as stock spare...
I have seen some pics flying around with a roof mount spare tire holder....but I can't imagine having to get it down if I needed to use it...

But guys really....go big all the way !

Thats the funny thing , yet it's getting very old, very fast, about this forum Tweeze. If you ask a question here regarding the spare tire or anything to do with a spare tire removal everyone here wants to convince you to keep it , because you might get a flat , or you may not be able to sleep at night because everyone knows that the sun will not rise the next day if you dare to take off the spare and put something else on in its place.

If you do a search on this forum on spare tire removal, you'll notice there isn't one good answer because everyone gives their opinion on why you should leave it on there. I had the same question, and after reading 20 posts on the subject, not 1 solid answer. But if you ask about what size light bulb you need for the fog light, members here are diving over each other to quickly type in what they have.

When I took my spare off, I looked at Gobiracks.com, and they don't have one like they show in the pictures. I also looked at all the websites I could find that sell Hummer parts, and they don't have one. So, when no one here could give me an answer or help on the issue, I went to a body shop and had them fill in the holes, and paint. It looks good , to me, I still look at it as a H3 without the spare on the back, and when I did get a flat due to a 6 inch nail I was able drive to a shop and have it plugged.

We pulled our spare and stuck it on top of the truck. Used a cover instead of a plate that allows the air vent to breath, while holding our backup camera, CB antenna and GPS.

That looks really good, I thought about doing that myself but wonder how the heck would I get that down if I were by myself.

To answer to the the guy before you
1- I wheel alot so if I were to get a flat and I would not have a spare I would be screwed, since I am the only H3 in the club, Jeep wheels just won't work.
2- I think its just the responsible thing to do.
3- Most people don't carry all the safety gear here is a link to a list we require as a club.

4- I have been wheeling since I was in diapers and remember all the times as a kid we had to leave one vehicle behind because we didn't have something to fix it, just be prepared for anything- but then again you may have blonde star- she can't come get you, if she can't find you !

Hope this answered at least one of your questions, and remember its only my opinion. !
Don't leave home without it!

I have searched and posted in the past looking for a cover for that vent (or a more attractive alternative) and have come up totally empty handed. Ideally i would like a pre-painted or paintable plastic cover the used the same bolt hole (I know I saw that once in a post and it was different from the Gobi one) but I have yet to find any single product for sale to replace that though. I don't think one actually exists.

Its true that you do need a FULL SIZE SPARE!! Although, if your not going off road on a regular basis it saves on weight and rear vision. I orginally looked at buying the GOBI plate and it was like $189.00 (CRAZY!!) Thats when I decided to make my own. I went to Ace hardware and got some steel plate and new bolts. They sell the steel for about 10-$20 for a 12"x24" piece (beats the tar out of $189!) and then painted it myself. I love the look, not too many H3's have this unique feature. I do recommend that you carry a spare when off road, dont want to be stranded!
