jman, most buyers are the on road type but the "aura" of the vehicle is part of what makes it attractive. My vette will go 170 mph but I never will. The vehicle is also built and marketed as the "best in class" off road vehicle. I can tell you that if GM offered an offroad package, a real off road package and not the Adventure package, they would be surpruised at the number of buyers that would opt for it. Every H3 I see on the trails, and there are quite a few, has had a lot of aftermarket items added to it to improve the off road performance( lights, nerf bars, under carriage prtotection, roof racks, brushguards, etc. Why not offer that as an option package just like the Tactical, Lux, etc? I would rather check a box and get it all than spend a lot of time and money hunting stuff all over the internet. Anyway, I think there is a place for it in the lineup and a demand for it in the marketplace. Hope to see it soon.

Many good responses, I am surprised a forum about Hummers can be this active.
Anyway, I will try to go with option 1 and finance a base model, maybe add some mods and I can always trade it in for an Alpha down the line.

What are the best performance enhancing mods? Someone mentioned considering a stick instead of the auto, I fear that will hurt the resale though. I guess it depends onwhat is available.

A stick will shrink the pool of potential buyers but be very attractive to the people that want it. Buy the car for yourself though. If it cost you a little on resale at least it was what you wanted.

I certainly don't want to get into a war of words with anyone, I'm definitely not the SUV type but I like the exotic-ness of a Hummer H3 so I got one, not sure how much offroading I'll do in my lifetime but I do like the 33 inch tires w/ the adv pkg so I got that also (well, maybe the salesman talked me into it LOL)

I have an I5 model, and the power (or lack there of) does not bother me in the slightest, even with my 35's.

To me, the extra power of the Alpha would not be worth the extra money and loss in mileage.

Just a thought.

If you decide to sell it yourself in a few years it may make it a little harder to find the right buyer, but at the same time, the people that buy a used vehicle are also more typicly interested in manual transmisions ie younger and looking to spend less.

Hummer drivers tend to be unique. You see tons of mods done to them. Some I don't really care for but the trucks lend themselves to being personalized. I spend a lot of time off road so that aspect of the Hummer appeals to me. I think if GM were smart they would offer the Wilderness ready package, a chrome bling package, etc and their margins would go way up. The main thing is that your Hummer is exactly the way you want it. I know guys that will never take there Hummers off road and others that hardly drive them unless they are going wheeling. Both are fine. Many people I know that didn't think they would ever go wheeling have gotten the bug. You have a great looking rig and I can see why you love it.

I tend to look at capabilities and what my wife likes. Had a 07 Dodge Ram Sport quad cab. Was a great truck (Loved the Hemi), but we realized it was a little cramped in the back seats for adults and was hard to watch the DVD (Grand Kids), did't really need itand it was a gas hog. H3 had better AC, more Adult room in the back, feels secure, GrandKids Love it, fits in my garage better, turns better and love its capabilities. Plus,I think it looks good.

My Personal Opinion is that the I-5 is fine for on/off road say 60/40 split,But if you find you spen the majority of time on road the the V8 would be my choice?
I had the Jeep V8 GJ and on road it would kick *** but did lack off road.
Where now with the hummer I have it the other way arround
