94 H1 with AC heat issues... Need help!
Hi everyone, I recently purchased my dream ride. I have always wanted a H1. I would have liked to go with a newer model, preferably the 98, but I tried to save some money and picked up a 94 SUT model, with a 6.5 and an aftermarket turbo.
I purchased it online and had it shipped here. Unfortunately, the seller's description of this unit was a complete lie and now I am going to have way more money in this unit then if I would have just bought the 98 in the first place.
When I picked it up, the odometer was not working so mileage is unknown contrary to his statements. The paint was oxidized and the clear coat is coming off on the hood. There was supposed to be no rust on the unit but the passenger front door has some front rust issues and well as along the seam of the roof, the back cab corner just above the box, and about 5 other spots. Here is the real disappointment, I drove the H1 to get an inspection and pick up 2 of the bridesmaids as we were getting married 2 days later, and the rear driver hub assembly came apart at 70 mph and we almost had a severe accident. I managed to keep it under control. They estimate just under $1000 to fix the area where the wheel tore out. The inspection proved they had completely lied about doing a 122 point inspection as all the bakes were completely gone, the front driver brake was worn right into the fins of the rotor and you could break chunks of metal off with your fingers. By the time the inspection was done and I had purchased a new hub assembly, the bill was over $6000.
I also made sure to ask about the AC as I had read the early years had some trouble. They told me it blows ice cold. Now that it has arrived, the AC and heat do not work at all. They blow whatever temp it is outside and that is it. Now I read that they do not make replacement parts for the 94, and I have to buy the upgrade. Damn... I am trying to make some attempt to save some money. I was watching some AC heater parts on ebay and asked a friend to bid on an auction for me while I was at work. He bid alot higher then I had told him to but I am hoping that these are the right parts and that it will still save me some money.
Would anyone look at the auction and tell me what else it appears I will need to do the upgrade or if I even purchased the right parts? I know I will need the newer controls.

Also, is there a step by step manual for how to do the upgrade that I can give my local mechanic?
Thanks for your time and assistance guys, I look forward to talking with you all in the future!!!

That looks like the main unit. You will need the control panel and blower motor. Not sure if the ducts are different. May be some harness differences also. I have not done the exchange. Kascar sells all of the parts for the HVAC swap. The unit you bought generally sells for $7-800.00 in good shape. PM Hummech, he can tell you a lot more about how to do the swap.

i would not jump right to the hvac replacement before you find out what is wrong with the system. on those older systems the water valve always gets plugged up which is maybe why your heater won't work. does the a/c controler temp. bar at the bottom of the display flash when you try to change the temp? also is the a.c. system holding a freon charge?
the reason that people change out their hvac units is because the heater core is leaking or the evap is leaking.

Thanks guys. Hummech, I will check on the points you mentioned and PM you if that is ok? I was just told by a guy that if both didn't work that I must have to do the upgrade. I would like to use this thing in the winters here, and the climate is very cold. It can get down below -30*F so I am also wondering if I shouldn't do the upgrade anyways. Are the old systems that bad? I would rather spend the money now then limp through winter with my windows frosted over and no visual.
Also, anyone in a similar cold weather climate? How are these things for starting in the winter? Any additional measures I can take to help ensure I don't get stranded somewhere? I don't have the injection system, I have a mechanical pump 6.5 and aftermarket turbo.
Thanks again guys, I wish I would have done a little more research on here before I made the purchase, this site is very helpful and there were tips that I really could have used for making my purchase.

the a/c upgrade is a good thing to do now if you have the money to do it. it will also increase the value of your hummer. if the temp gets into the 30's i would run a thinner oil during the winter months. i would also check the coolant and make sure that it is mixed 50/50 with water. i would also change the fuel filter other that that you have the most reliable to get you threw winter.
by the way your windows will still fog up this winter, the upgrade makes it better but that is why AM General went to heated windshields..
