Hi people, im new here in the forums, and I joined because I'm about to trade in my 2007 explorer eddie bauer for an H3, and I have two offers, a 2006 H3 with 3.5l engine (220hp) or a 2007 H3 with a 3.7l engine (242HP).

It seems kinda obvious that I should get the 2007, but then again, I have read that the 3.5l engine has a torque of 225 lb-ft @ 2600rpm, while the 3.7 is higher on 242lb-ft but at 4600rpm..

Why is there such a big difference? what bennefits will I get with the 3.7l or is better the 3.5?

I also have read that the 3.5 runs 0-60 in abou 11 seconds. Is there a difference compared to the 3.7?? this is just curiosity because obviously you don't buy a hummer because of speed or acceleration.

I would greatly apreciate your feedback because it can ultimately affect my final desition. Right now I'm on 2007 3.7l but that 4600rpm worries me a bit.

Well, you have the numbers, so you know that 20 HP in the 3.7 LLR is a 10% boost courtesy of increasing the bore from 93MM to 95.5MM and keeping the same stroke of 102MM.
What I personally would say is the biggest difference is.. WARRANTY. The 2007 has 100K, significantly better than the 06! No brainer if you ask me?

 

Warranty actually doesn't matter for me because I live in south america right now. I'm importing it. That means zero warranty here in my country (I'll still have it if I go to USA with the truck =P but that won't do..).

What I'm actually willing to know is if that drastically reduction in torque@rpm would affect me and how? with a 2006 I'm getting max torque at 2.800rpm while on a 2007 I'm getting it at a very high 4.600rpm; will that decrease the acceleration fo the vehicle? will that decrease the abbility in offroad tracks or when driving in mud?.

I mean.. what's the point of increasing HP by a mere 22 horses while changing the torque curve so that now I will need to be at 4.600 rpm just to reach the max output, wich could actually reduce the acceleration or strenght of the vehicle? This actually I don't know because I'm not a car guru =P

 

If I'm not mistaken, the 3.7 makes more power through the entire power range than the 3.5 ltr.

I have an 07 H3, and I like it. It rides well, and turns really good for a vehicle it's size. The vehicle IS a bit under-powered for a vehicle it's size, but due to the I-5 motor, it is a bit more gas conservative compared to the V8 editions.

If you don't mind me asking, why are you trading the 07 Explorer Eddie Bauer edition for an H3 ? The Eddie Bauer edition Explorer is a pretty nice vehicle in my opinion.

i'll just throw my two cent in.. i studied mechanical engineering with a minor in automotive powertrains so i'll throw some theory out there...

first i would check to see what the 3.7L torque value is at whatever rpm value the 3.5 reaches it's max. I'm pretty sure it will be at least the same if not higher..so therefore you will not lose acceleration. The torque cars for engines are much flatter than horsepower curves..

SO if that's the same the benefit would be the higher horsepower..

HP is a math calculation from the value of torque. For example if im a boxer and i can punch with a force of 100lbsat one time..that's great. But If im a boxer that can punch 100lbs at a rate of 50 times a minute..i would be a better boxer. The same holds true with HP vs torque, torque is the value of how much power you can prodcue, and HP is mathematical calculation of how often you can do it in a time frame..(torque*RPM*conversion factors=HP) so that's where you benefit of the 3.7 will come in.

You will not lose any acceleration.. only gain..
