The Goodyear Wrangler Authority I put on my wife's Durango and we both love the way they handle in all conditions especially snow. They have 10,000 miles on them and with normal rotation they look almost brand new. Very happy. I put on the Goodyear Duaratracs on my H3 and they are nice as well, but next time I might just go with the Authority to save alot of money. The Authority also does not have a lot of road noise, which makes my wife happy. I also think Authority only comes in a 265 not the 285, but check it out.

Default upgrading to 285 is a dumb idea

almost everyone here expresses a desire for better mileage, and they often pay big money to try to get an improvement. often the outlay never pays off.

my brief experience with 2 h3 trucks tells me this;
my 07 with 265 tires gave 20 mpg.
my 10 with 285 tires gives 18 mpg on the same trip.
"IF" all is equal,i loose 10% by going up to 285.??
unless there is a tread design desired and not available on 265 i would stick with 265.
if i wanted a different tread or appearance id try to get it in a 265.

i try not to let my ego drive my decision making! even my decision to buy a h3 was seat of the pants driving experience,no a need to impress anyone,,,but me!!

I can tell you switching from a stock 265 Goodyear Wrangler RT/S to a 305/70R16 mud tire, I only lost 1/2 MPG. From 18MPG highway to 17.5 and 14MPG city to 13.5MPG (calculated over several tank averages). Also with the 4.56 gears, at highway cruising speed it is at a lower (more desirable) RPM with the 33's over the stock 32's. Personally, I would never run anything smaller then a 33" on an H3 but that is just my personal preference.

I drive 65 miles a day. Why did i buy a Hummer because I liked it. I do not want to switch tire sizes. I bought this for Iowa winters. I will not be mudding off roading in this Hummer much. Mabye I didnt add this it has 2 new front tires on it 2656-75-16 goodyear wrangler RT/S I can get 2 more new ones for 150$ a pop from a friend at Sears. What is the best idea. From what I see online Hummer H3's came stock with these tires.

I would definitely move up to 285-75-16 tires as they start to fill up those big wheel wells. I went with 315's and the look just right.
I always got consistently 20 mpg with my 285 tires even when the H3 was new and not broken in. Now with the 315 I get 17 and 18 if no hills. Different mpg can also be because of tire construction, brands, elevation and air pressure so it is hard to compare.
285's are a good compromise between the 265's and 315's. For those driving in deep snow getting more ground clearance is a big plus. I think you get 1 1/2" to 2 full inches of ground clearance going from 265's to 315's.
