I'm guessing the GM Book states "tech time" for a head gasket to be longer than the 4.5 hours you stated. Depending on which side of the V8 we are talking about there may be several different components that need to be removed to allow the removal of the entire cylinder head then R&R the gasket. Oh yeah, cleaning the block and cylinder head of gasket material, diagnostic time for cyliner wall and piston checks, head and valeve diagnostic time may also come into play. Then the reassembly of all the parts removed.

I agree it probably takes longer then 4.5 hours, but that wasn't my estimate, that's the number 'IgottgaH3again' said the stealership quoted him (which I figure they got from the tech time book from GM). My point was, that if, in fact, that is what they charged for labor, it's unbelievable that some gaskets, fluids, bolts, plugs, rags, etc., could add up to an additional $1500+

Well then lets play the guessing game:
What do you think is the total cost of replacing the SIRs when they blow??????

VERY expensive. I can't put a number on it, but I know the parts cost a bundle.....that's why they're a hot item for thieves, but I guess I'm missing your point.

this whole deal seems iffy.......you drove it in, ran good, and needed head gasket? I have been a auto Tech for 20 years, and have seen many things, but I never have seen a 5.3 leak externally or internally from headgasket whithout it being severely overheated .....especially this low of mileage......doesnt make sense......maybe dealership is generating some warranty work for themselves in slow times??????

It's been a few days now. I've driven it a few times, probably less than 100 miles. It smells like coolant when I get out after a trip. I'm going to drive about 125 miles today. I'll keep an eye on it.
