2008 - Cylinder Head Issue
I'm well aware of the "dreaded" cylinder head issue, but I'm not familiar with the years of H3's affected.
Recently purchased a 2008 H3 (luxury and adventure) with 19,000 miles. Literally the day bought, the check engine light came on. CarMax has been great taking care of it. I haven't heard the code thrown back, but the mechanic said he was replacing all the cylinders and head with the newer upgraded one.
Is this still an issue into the 2008 model year?

2008's were not involved in the issue however a head can go bad on any car. You should be still covered under warranty. 4 year 50K bumper to bumper, 5 year 100K power train on the 08's. A Hummer or most GM dealers would cover that for free.

Interesting.
I haven't gotten the code from the dealer...so I don't know what it spit out.
But the dealer is replacing all the cylinders and putting on a new head. Free of charge. CarMax is picking up the tab. Interestingly, another 08 at CarMax had the exact same issue. We happened to be looking at that one, a few weeks earlier. Saw the guy at the GM repair shop, so he told us what they did.
Either, it really happened...or the dealer is scamming on CarMax at our benefit.
It has a 100,000/5 year warranty...which based on our driving habits..is 3 years more warranty. So I'll be able to keep an eye on it.

Check with a service advisor on trying to find the "in-service" date for your truck. Also, find out the mileage on that date. This is the date/mileage that your warranty period will count from. If you have a 2008, there's a good chance your in-service date is late 07, early 08. It's a good idea to print out/write down the dates and keep them in your glove box or service record folder (however you keep track of your stuff).
