When I stick key in ignition, car turns on, cranks, spins over, but does not stay cranked unless I step on gas pedal.
Why did you start at the engine?
Did you check for trouble codes?

I can give you a list of potential causes:

maf
map
cas
tps
tbi
fis
fpm
pcv
ecm
++++++++++++many more

Scan the computer for codes and post them.

When it happened, I did something extremely stupid, removed the battery cable. But my old engine was going out anyway, so replaced it for a hell of a deal. 1100 installed for a engine with 32,000

There is what they call a MEGA fuse inside the fuse box under hood. I had the same exact thing happen to my truck. This is first vehicle I've ever seen that is fused between alternator and battery. Only a couple bucks at part store and super easy to replace. It actually bolts in to the fuse box if I recall corectly.

Welcome to HF.

While we appreciate your effort to try to help..... adding information to a TWO YEAR OLD THREAD???? really doesn't.
