I am currently in the mkt for a 1996 open top H1, it is a 6.5 liter turbo diesel, 27K original miles.

I am going to look at the vehicle next week and I was hoping someone could give me some advise. I'm going to be taking a veteran diesel mechanic (tractor trailer) along with me.

Is there anything I should look out for with this truck? I know there are some transfer case issues, maybe some CITS issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated, really want the truck but not at the cost of constant maintenance....

H1s are unique vehicles and do require maintenance above that of a normal vehicle. It helps to be able to do some wrenching yourself. The main thing on the H1s is to keep the maintenance current. If the previous owner has deferred a lot of it it can cost 5K+ to get the truck back to where it should be. H1s get a major service every 12K miles. Find out when the last one was. HVAC is expensive to fix. Crawl under the truck and look for leaks. If maintained the H1s are worth the extra effort.
