MP3 is, by definition, a compressed file type, which is why it's so much smaller than the WAV files commonly found on a normal CD.
This is take directly from wikipedia.com-
MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more commonly referred to as MP3, is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio storage, as well as a de facto standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on digital audio players.
My original statement still stands. The 6-disc head unit will not play MP3's. If you were to convert (i.e. uncompress) them, they would no longer be MP3's.

Unless your head unit looks like the one below, you are pretty much out of luck with regards to MP3 playback.

Notice it has the MP3 logo on the face as well as file folder icons on the number 5 and 6 channel buttons.
Very hard to find head unit....

I have this rare MP3 player, and i still cant get the thing to work. it will play wma files but no matter what i try it wont play .mp3 disks. I have tried all the songs on the root of the disk, i have tried folders and i have tried a mixture of the two.

I also have the above "MP3" player model. All I did was burn a mp3 cd through itunes. Created a play list, in the settings I set it to burn to mp3 instead of the normal .wav file. Plays with no problems. Got rid of all the cd's in my truck and replaced it with the one mp3 disc!

Burning a CD in a format that is playable by all CD players is what I was referring to when I said " If you were to convert (i.e. uncompress) them, they would no longer be MP3's." When you burn a data disc, you're just burning straight MP3's. They are already compressed. When you burn a music disc, the burning program converts the MP3's into WAV files, which can be played on most any CD player. This is the reason you can only get 20 or so songs, because WAV files are much bigger than MP3's.
