06 h3 3.5 check engine light. K&N?
So I am new to this forum and seeking out who knows their stuff about the H3's this is the issue that I am presented with.
We just picked up an 06 H3 with about 69k on the clock. The vehicle has a K&N intake on it, it was on the vehicle when we bought it. The check engine light came two hours after leaving the dealership. We took it back to the shop immediately to have them throw it on the scan tool and so they can record the issue. They erased the code and said they don't know why it came on after about two more hours of playing with it, doing nothing but re clearing codes. I took the vehicle home put it on my computer I am getting a P0171 bank 1 lean. After taking it back a few times and telling them to clean sensors they did nothing so. I pulled the sensors cleaned them, cleaned the throttle body, greased the joints where the hoses connect and checked the worm clamps, and still the light came on. Dealer keeps saying its the K&N but my friend works at the sales lot and was driving the vehicle around with no check engine light. The iat is about 84* when it comes on under load or not It will then shut off for a while and come back on usually around 25 to 35 miles, however that doesn't mean the issue goes away. We put both o2 sensors in without telling the dealer and marked them. We also marked all the sensors in indiscreet locations and they have replaced nothing. They want to put the stock air box in but keep "forgetting" to order it they said free of charge. Any one else have a problem when removing the stock airbox I worked in a parts store and have sold hundreds of these systems without a problem we also spoke with K&N and they said they have not had the problem.
I think I covered everything if you have questions just ask and I will be with you asap. Thanks, Fred.

Fred you obviously checked the small things right? The fitment of the K&N Filter itself right? Connection to the Mas air flow sensor? Throttle body? System was tight and no movement when installed correct? How about the prongs on the MAS?

yes i checked and triple checked all of those things. The stock intake is back on it and there is no check engine light. We then proceeded to remove stock filter and replace it with the k&n that came with the kit and it fits with no check engine light, then remove the lid from the box and we don't get a light, however there is still a box slowing the air down before it goes into the intake.

Take the lid off and you actually reduce performance by increasing intake temperature (that is the short to the point version). That is the essence of the shortcomings of an open system.
When you get a CEL with an open system like the K&N it is because you have a leak downstream from the MAF, or the MAF itself my be dirty or just bad. The leak can be from improper installation, a poor clamps, and with any of the plastic K&Ns, a hairline crack. Go back to the parts store and get MAF cleaner and follow the intructions on the can. DO NOT TOUCH the MAF (I did see you said you cleaned the sensors, but I added this because you would be surprised what some poeple use or do to "clean a snesor"). If you already sprayed the MAF with something else, good luck.
IMHO there is no point to cleaning an 02 sensor, if you are going to pull it, replace it even if it is a little early in miles.
