Default Replacing sunroof seal

My seal is getting torn around the glass edges of the sunroof and I need to replace it. Has anyone done this, and if so does it come off easy? When you put the new one on do you need to put a sealer of some sort the channel first? I haven't ordered it yet, but it looks like it's about $120 for the blasted thing. I don't know if it will come with instructions for the install so I figured I would try to get a heads up on the procedure. Searched for info, getting only one old thread with no conclusion. This is for a 07 Hummer H3. Thanks!

i never heard of it being done here. ooops, looked in the svc book.

1. Remove the sunroof window. Refer to Sunroof Window Replacement.
2. Carefully remove the sunroof window weatherstrip from the perimeter of the sunroof
window.
Carefully install the sunroof window weatherstrip to the perimeter of the sunroof window,
ensuring that the weatherstrip is fully seated.
they make it sound ez, 10 min job!!

There are 4 torx head screws visible with the sunroof closed and the sunshade open. Remove those and the window will push out from the interior. There is adjustability in these to properly set the level of the window in comparison to the roofline front to back and side to side. Note their original position by measuring from the bottom of the tabs the screws go through to the structure below. I used a feeler gage to make sure I got the window back in the original position. I was just making a slight adjustment and did not remove the window. There is a spec. that is measured on the roofline that happythree supplied in another post and I have seen it also in the service manual. happythree may chime in with those measurements. I wasn't clear if the measurement was from the roofline to the seal or roofline to the window. In any case it would be very hard to measure. That is why I took my measurements from the inside. As far as using a sealant, I don't know. If there is evidence of any on the old one, I would say yes. But my guess is that it is not used. Keep us updated. Good Luck

yeah, you gotta read the book and see the poor drawing and kind of,sort of decide for yourself!!

its .020 down from metal in front, .020 up in back.
my GUESS is its to the glass. my untouched 10,is about level. you would not want the rubber below the metal anywhere or wawa could lay there.
i think your feeler gage is the most important thing. mine is snug and i can lay a hose up there,no nozzle and get none in!!,,,none
i can see water laying on the glass/rubber, none gets thru the glass- rubber. its the rubber-metal so get it even. must be tricky to do huh?

could you put 4 spacers in while the panel is loose, then snug it up?
doing the screws from bottom while doing the .020 on top seems impossible!!

Thanks for the info. I suppose I will break down and buy a service manual since it seems like I'm going to be working on this thing a lot. I had already adjusted the glass surface up as far as it would go in the front which basically made it flush with the roof. When I got it, the glass was nearly 1/2 inch down below the metal in the front drivers corner and water was pooling there and dripping right through the seal into the channel underneath. It is flush on all sides right now. I'll have to take it off anyway to do the new seal, then I'll try to get it right or as close as possible on re-installation.

Well so much for an easy fix. I received my new seal and took off the roof panel. Started taking off the old seal to find out there is ANOTHER rubber piece that is permanently attached to the metal frame that holds the glass. This rubber surrounding the glass is tearing away from the sunroof unit. It is basically stamped/glued to the metal frame and cannot be removed or replaced. The whole piece is one unit, and is $500 on GMparts website. There are about 3 places that have pulled away from the frame. I am going to attempt to repair it by using 3m super weatherstrip adhesive on the bad spots and hope it bonds to the edges of the glass and rubber that it separated from. Probably be lucky if it holds for a year. Wouldn't be surprised if I have to redo it once a year or so. I really don't want to have to buy a new sunroof just for this. It's kind of ironic that the rubber "replaceable" piece that I removed from my sunroof is actually in nearly new condition. I am returning the one I ordered and getting my $115 back.

I didn't think about taking any photos, but it's pretty straightforward. You can actually see the tough rubber piece that is mounted to the glass frame from underneath when you have the sunshade open and the roof closed. And the replaceable rubber seal around the perimeter comes off really easily, goes back on ok if you use just a little dab of o-ring lube in the channel to re-insert onto the flange of the hard rubber part, (the part that was pulling away on mine). So far, so good. Took it through the car wash with only a drop or two through the seal into the drain tray. It is staying put right up against the metal where it should be.
