Default OFFROAD FLAG BRACKETS

Alright, and now for the post you have all been waiting for......NOT. Yeah, ok most a you guys will never use one of these, but if you go to an ORV area, most require a flag. So, just to provide some assistance/ideas for those that might, and with courtesy and assistance to Hotrodtom:

"Imade a bracket out of a swing arm retaining strap from a vw. had them lying around, cut one in half, gave it a twist in a vise, and had a mount within 5 minutes! i didnt even need to drill holes, they were already in the strap and the right size. it feels good to be lucky every once in awhile. im sure you could come up with something similiar with a piece of flat stock. you can easily get the nut on the front shackle tight enough so it wont move, works great." Hotrodtom 7/25/07.

Iwent OVERKILL. Used 1.5" x 1/8" u channel, cut to length 9.25", cut the Channel sides at 2.25", put a bend slightly passed 90 degrees (to tilt the flag fwd and away from the grill when moving since the wind pushes them back at ya), drilled a 7/16" hole for the flag and tow hook mounting plate bolt, and a weld on each channel side at the bend. Primed, and then painted with Rust-Oleum Hammered Black.

You could go to a hardware and get a cheap white metal "L" bracket so long as the holes are 7/16" or better, but hey, what fun would that be.

Where do you use these things? http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7...4760--,00.html I'll be there Wed-Sun 8/8- 8/12, Hotrodtom will be over the weekend.

Check out these parks for more http://www.offroaders.com/directory/...road-Parks.htm.

See ya in the dirt.

Doc doc doc doc, DOC!! You must be an engineer my friend ... over complicating such an easy task lol .. I use 3 zip ties to hold my flag to my tail light guards or I zip tie it to the brush guard ... spent $2 bucks on the zip ties and I have a feeling I'll still have some left by the time the truck falls apart LOL!

I do like your suggestions here but I have one minor concern ... aggressive approach/departure angles. I know for a fact both of those would have been absolutely mauled out in Haspin Acres where I normally go to get muddy.

Another good suggestion.....zip ties. Not for me, but certainly an option. That kinda be like taping on your cat back exhaust with duct tape? I got no Brush gaurd and no tail lights guards. Flag has to be in the front at many parks, at least at silver lake anyway. If you project a straight tangent line from the front tire tread of 33's to the front, it will intersect the undercarriage or bumper before anything hits the bracket. With your 35s, it may get close, maybe too close. Nope, not an engineer, just a fabricator palying with steel. Thanks for the input. I only use the damn flag when and where they require it. Note my flage pole is BLACK like the H3!!!!

Up top o the Mitten divide, I'm goin there first, there are some really steep approaches, won't need the flag, but I will check out your criticisms further. In sand, it would just plow thru, if the approach required a nose banging before contacting your wheels.

Oh yeah. My cost was zero, just scrap steel andplay time with chopsaw, air drill, and welder.

looks good but dear lord can you imagine the skin that will be hanging off that big black bracket after a few weeks? I can feel the pain now as you bang your leg into it everytime you walk around the truck

You Guys, you only bolt it on when you are gonna use it. It don't stay on for the trips to Winn Dixie.

Zyne: I do, really, appreciate your critique. There are no rocks etc...to crawl in lower Michigan (legally anyway), so a sharp approach need not be addressed here. However, I have already started work on the Zyne improved design . It's going up, not so much out, and I'll do a brush guard mount as well.

Impkr: it's just a pedestrian poker

Thanks fellas.

Doc, I think that's a great idea.

BUT, If you have an H3, all you need is one thick zip tie to tie it around your driver's or passengers mirror. I use the nut and the bolt on the bottom of the flag pole, wrap the zip tie around that, then up in front of the flag pole, and sit it in the crack between the mirror bracket and the mirror arm. Basically as long as you tighten it enough, it will hold up to anything. I just figured this out a few weeks ago when we went, and it worked great. No drilling, no tools, nothing, and at the end of the day, you just cut the zip tie off. It stood up to pretty much everything and only came out once because of a huge branch that made it bend almost 100 dgrees in the opposite direction.

I like your idea and if I went off-roading all the time, I'd definitely do it, but for more casual people, there is an easier way. I just thought I'd put out the other option.

YES, if you guys want a pic on how to do it, I can attach it when I get home and post one. It's hard to explain and easier to show in a picture, but a 2 minute process.

LOL! Don't take it as me raggin' on ya cuz I wasn't ... it's a good idea I think and now I'm curious to see the "improved" design. Hell, if they turn out good I'd be inclined to poke atcha and ask for a price so I can buy one off of you. I know the downside with the zip tied approach is if you get your flag stuck in something it will tear loose my tail light guards on one side. I got a non-OEM model on an -03 H2 so they are held on with 3M double sided on the outside. Not the best approach but .... what can you do lol!
