Default Gas needle lies?

Hey All,

Just got a 2010 H3 I5 manual, Loving it so far

I had a question about the gas needle, maybe mine is just tricked but, last two tanks when I filled up the first quarter of the tank drops really fast, like 40 miles for the first quarter.
Last time I filled when the needle said half, and the pump said only 7.8 gallons went in. I figured, thats strange but Ill ride a whole tank next time and see what happens.

This time I rode it down to an 1/8 tank, filled up today... only 16.3 gallons went in, odometer said about 260 miles for this tank.. Does this thing not actually have a 23 gallon tank?

I havent ridden down until the light comes on, going to try that next. 23 gallons / 8 is 2.875, so I was surprised the light didnt come on at that point.
Maybe a few more tanks itll un trick itself?

Any help appreciated thanks

Its not lying to you. The gas needle indicator on the gauge just takes some getting used to.

There is a amber warning light in addition to the gauge that will come on when you have approximately 2 gallons of fuel left..

Maybe keep a mpg log till you feel more comfy with your new rig.

23 gallon tanks do not hold 23 gallons of fuel, the filler tube extends down into the tank to allow an air space for expansion when in hot temps.

I get that 23 gallon tanks dont hold the full 23 gallons.. but.. ~4 gallons off? does that seem right ?

Got that number from 23/8 =2.875 (1/8 tank) and I filled 16.3 to full so, that means I had 6.7 leftover?
6.7 - 2.875 = ~4
does the filler tube hold ~4 gallons?

You will never fill a fuel tank to capacity specifications! There are many variables in your scenario, accuracy of the gas station pump, fuel sender/float, and instrument cluster. Only getting 40 miles from fill-up to 3/4, proves there is an issue with the sender, float, gauge, or possibly your filling to fast causing aeration? No need to replace parts, just run it empty then you will know. There should be a couple gallons reserve when the gauge hits empty.

thanks for the response, Those sneaky gallons are hiding somewhere!
honestly surprised how this thing goes for gas on the highway, surprisingly good! I heard of people getting like 20 on the highway, i was stumped until my brother who has an h3 did just that on our last road trip.

The rig is all stock, I don't care about the mpg much, just care about range, I hate having to stop
I like that this thing goes like 320 a tank on a mix of highway and around town. anyone got a max range they've done in their rig?

Ill run it to empty when I can and let yall know how it goes

Never going to get 20 unless you're driving down hill or the wind will be always at your back! There are variables that come into account: cargo weight, engine performance, brake pads/bearings/tires rolling resistance.

congrats to OP on the dogleg 2010 H3- those are few and far between. the MPGs for these trucks are abysmal but increasing tire PSI, ditching the spare tire/carrier/roof rack (if equipped) and avoiding jack rabbit starts might get you into the mid teens mixed city/highway...More drastic hypermiling techniques like not using the AC or rolling down the windows, not opening the sunroof, drafting from the vehicle in front of you and shifting into neutral going down hill (pulse and glide) could prob squeeze a few more miles to your tank but not worth it IMHO. Enjoy the truck for what it is, and remember, there are trucks/SUV's out there that get even worse MPGs..

Yeah, I've had the same thought on the needle, dips. I get ~50 at the first quarter, then ~150 at the half mark. Obviously not linear!

no it is not linear it is dynamic depending on what the MPG is reading so it will fluctuate depending on how much it thinks you have to empty with your driving style.
