GDI engines cause more carbon buildup since the fuel is not washing over the valves.
Cleaning the valves can be performed using the fuel injectors on port injection engines. Seafoam Works

It would be best if you had someone with the correct logging software to see whats going on. You need to make sure both knock sensors are working and that fuel pressure is increasing to 60 psi when it enters PE mode. There are plenty other things that need to be looked at also, need to determine if its a failing sensor or mechanical.

Sorry it’s been so long. It has been an incredibly busy month or so. Finals, Christmas, now the beloved SAT is on its way. And truthfully it is just too damn cold outside to work on this.

However, I did manage to do plugs and wires in December. it was actually very easy and I have no idea why people say it’s hard. It took less than 3 hrs. For me, that’s pretty good.

I used a long flat screwdriver, pushed down decently hard on the heat shield in the groove, pried while pulling up on the wire at the same time. I didn’t brake a single wire. For the passenger rear, it is really easy if you get under the truck to do the whole thing. Including pulling the boot off the coil. The ac line in the way makes it unnecessarily difficult, but from underneath you can get at it all. There is just enough room to get a socket in there and a pair of channel locks for the shield if you need, but i could basically get my whole hand around it and pull. Honestly the hardest part was getting the boot by the ac line back on. For anyone wondering. Spark plug torque spec is half an ugga dugga with a short ratchet. So not as tight as you’d expect.

The plugs didn’t look excessively worn but they needed changed. I don’t have pictures of the plugs on me right now but I do have pictures of 4 of the pistons in order of i think, 1,5,4,6 if I remember correctly. They’re not very good and I can’t tell what is piston and what is carbon buildup. It looks fine to me.

Side note: just passed 100k miles.
Also I contacted magnuson about how to top engine cleaner. They said there is a port for a boost gauge on the back of the intake manifold. However I believe that’s the same port the instructions said to re plumb the bypass valve actuator to. So I’ll unhook that, hold the bypass valve open and see if I can spray sea foam or top engine cleaner down it. I have a spray can of seafoam, so that is an option.
