Transmission slipping

Transmission slipping
I believe my transmission is slipping, I've noticed it the last few months. Engine seems to rev higher when pressing the accelerator but car does not respond.
The rig has 165k on it and is not driven very much.
How long do I have before it outright fails?
Do I need a brand new transmission or would a repair do the trick?
Also, should I fix before I attempted to sell it? Or leave as is (if I chose to sell it).
I'd love your guys' advice, never had any transmission problems with any of my vehicles before, this is my first.
Thanks

Did you get a GM rebuilt tranny or off brand? What was the labor charge?

I did the GM replacement which was about $3200 at the dealer, my buddy used a local shop for his H3 rebuild which was $1,500 out the door and I think I should have went that route looking back at it because his has been flawless and mine is starting to get that 50 RPM slip about once a week.
If your at 165k miles on an original trans your living on borrowed time.

The part isn't marked up much at all, few hundred bucks.
