Play in steering wheel while parked and turned off?
#11
If the wheels aren't completely straight when parked, it will have about 2 inches of play. If they are straight, I would recommend adjusting the steering box. I would only do it if it has trouble tracking straight on the road though. Mine has about an inch of play.

i am driving a Hummer H2 when i was 20 was many many presidents ago. and my 2003 has 1" of play when parked and not running as i stated above hummerz. no BS here. if i really twist on it i can probably get even more than in inch i am sure. the play is not in my gearbox. i have yet to see a car that does not have some type of free play while parked and not running. well other than a go-cart with a direct drive to wheels. that... had no play

My 2008 H3 Alpha had some play while driving then, quite drastically declined. A lot play while driving. Beginning of a turn would be normal then, I would have to work the wheel and then, would begin easily again. Initially suspected a power steering pump Amy be going bad. Took it to the shop and they saw that where the intermediate steering shaft connected to the upper shaft, the joint had busted and was held together only by the pin. Shop recommended not driving it home and have it towed. I was planning leaving it there to fix if it was a power steering pump or rack and pinion issue. Cost me about $950.
