I believe that once you remove it and replace it you will need to perform a re-learn. Important step.

I only have a simple ODB code reader so made a call to a local garage, told the guy I drive a 2006 H3 and replaced the crankshaft sensor. He told me to simply disconnect the battery for 10 mins so everything is clears and it will relearn, but if I didn't want to do that, bring it to his shop and he'll charge me $180 to do it with software.

Is that correct, different procedure for the same result? Is the scanner/software relearn procedure required for some reason, or will it relearn after disconnecting the battery then going for a test drive? Thanks!

To be perfectly honest with you I have heard you can force the ECM to do a relearn with a battery disconnect but this was for the throttle position sensor but not for the crankshaft sensor. You could try it and have nothing to loose and $180 to gain if it works.

Perhaps DocOlds can comment on this as he has an H3 with I5 so he would know.

Yeah, I'm thinking I may just do that.

I didn't want to start grilling the mechanic on the phone if he was 100% sure, but he basically said "whichever way you want to do it", disconnect the battery or pay me $180 to do it with the scanner.

I just replaced mine (2009 H2 SUV 6.2) a few months ago. No relearn? My Mechanic just popped the new one in and The rig ran fine. Wonder what is different?
